Kana or Kanji first? PLEASE HELP!

Postby williamst4334 » June 3rd, 2010 7:59 pm

Simple question: I'm currently using romaji to learn Japanese. To move to reading/writing, should I start with kana or the kanji? The general internet is no help as I've read opinions are pretty much split down the middle. Surely, there must be a true answer.

Why shouldn't I study them together? I suppose if I knew what the kanji is for and what the kana is for, that might help me determine as well.

Pleaes also see my other recent post: From Romaji to Kana/Kanji

Thanks!

Hello williamst4334-san,

I second what Javizy said in response to your other thread:

Basically, you need to start off learning hiragana and katakana and then move on to kanji.

So make sure you get down the kana (hiragana&katakana) before moving on to kanji. I would highly recommend checking out our Kantan Kana video series that teaches the absolute beginner how to read and write hiragana (katakana series to come soon!):
