How fast are we supposed to go?

Postby Iwakura » January 4th, 2010 6:42 am

Mina-san,

How fast are we supposed to go? The answer will differ for each person, of course, but and started out with the Newbie lessons a little over two weeks ago, and I'm now on Lesson 18, so I'd like some idea as to how fast I am supposed to be going. How many lessons is one supposed to handle a day? I could probably manage two; but in order to really let some of the material sink in, grammar-wise and such, I prefer to stick to 1 a day. Is that too slow? (I'm not doing the Kanji yet; was planning on getting into that after I finish at least 1 season).

Also, I'm unclear as to the progression line in general. People have advised me to start looking at Season 2 of the newbie series, for grammar. But it feels weird to me to just skip ahead half of the first season (weird as in: probably wrong to think that, as a newbie, I could just skip half a season). Or can these seasons be taken parallely? My idea was to go linearly, from season 1 to 2, etc. But there's also a beginners' series. Can they be taken parallel to the newbie course? Or are they supposed to come after the newbie series?

If someone could shed some light on this matter, I'd be most grateful.

I think the newbie series is supposed to come before the beginner series, and you can take them at whichever pace you can handle. There is no speed that one is "supposed" to go.

It all depends on the person but i think its best to learn something new one day, practice it then review it the next day. And each day make sure you practice each thing every day. So that way you make sure you are revising constantly. So every night or second night, write down a sample sentence for each pattern you know. or else it'll just slip your mind.

I study Japanese at university, and right now i'm meant to know about 1500 kanji altogether. There is no way in hell i would remember them all unless i practised. So i have a container full of flash cards and every day i select five random ones and write them down and go over them a few times. And then as i learn more kanji i add them to my collection and keep going.

If you haven't suffered whip-lash yet, you're not going fast enough.

Sounds like this would make your life a lot easier, and your reviews much more effective. You'll be up to 2000 in no time
