人なり?

Postby kepompong » June 30th, 2009 3:04 am

I've come bearing more question :P :P

So I've come across this sentence, あの人なりに理由があるんだよ
And I got stuck on the word hitonari. Guessing from the kanji, does it mean become a person?
If so, does the sentence basically means "there's freedom in becoming a person"
Uhhh, help?

The sentence translates as 'that person has reasons in that person's own way / He/she has his/her own reasons.' なりに, or なりの before nouns, means that someone/something does something in a way that is proper to them/it. It's usually translated as 'in their own way/style', but as you can see from the sentence, it doesn't correlate with the English, although you can see how the meaning remains.
