僕と付き合ってくれない VS ???

Postby newobsorder » October 29th, 2008 1:14 am

Hi everyone, I hope you can help me with a small problem...

僕と付き合ってくれない has the meaning(among others) of "would you go on a date with me?" right?
Then how do I say, "Would you become my girlfriend?" or something like that, which is the next step usually...?

Any help appreciated :)
Thanks!

In Japanese, the phrase 付き合う means to become one's boyfriend/girlfriend. so when you say 僕と付き合ってくれない? actually means, "Will you become my girlfriend?", unless you say it in a very casual situation where it's obvious there's no intention of "going on a date", such as 今日買い物行くんだけど、ちょっと、付き合ってくれない? in that case it just means, "would you mind going shopping with me?" or just going somewhere with you.

but...I'm not a dating expert so I could be wrong!

Thanks Hiroko,
I will make sure to make good use of this phrase soon I hope. And in the right context! I don't wanna end up doing shopping...
