In a recent lesson I heard Peter talking about itte ite. Which he said can be shortened to
itte te.

But, I still don't understand the more basic meaning of ~tte ite.

Te-iru is a grammatical structure used to express progressives and completed states, as well as a couple of other uses. It's covered in a bunch of lessons and takes a fair bit of studying, so you might as well wait until it comes up in the lessons at your regular level and then ask if you get stuck.
