how should i continue to learn japanese

Postby alchdemon » July 27th, 2007 12:39 am

so i've been learning Japanese for a while now. i know hirgana well , and katakana pretty decent , i know about 20-30 kanji atm, and about 100-150 words, but not inof verbs, most of them are adjectives. i mostly want to learn how to read japanese, but i always have problems reading, it hard without spaces. currently im in beginner lesson 20 (but ive learned a couple of phrases from other sources). should i continue with the lessons, learn new words by learning kanji, or learn new words by hiragana and then associate them with kanji?

I feel like im to romaji depedent atm (i can understand something in romaji instantly , but when in kana, it takes me 5 -10 times more for me to figure it out

The only advice I can give is to keep doing it. Sorry if it's not the kind of advice you're looking for, but if you just keep doing it the "5-10 times more" it takes to understand what you're reading gets quicker and quicker.
The fact that you can read but just find it difficult means that the more you do it the easier it will get.

If you want to learn to read Japanese, avoid romaji as much as possible. Force yourself to read kanji, hiragana and katakana. I find reading outloud helpful. Take your time, verbalize the words you are reading. You'll gain familiarity with vocabulary and eventually understand where one word ends and another begins. Get familiar with the particles too for hiragana/katakana words. I find those helpful as well in separating words. Actively look up kanji you don't know. If it's a kanji you "know" but are unsure, look it up. Be as active in your learning as possible.

And as maxie said, just keep at it. It is frustrating at times, but the more you read and the more you are exposed, the more you will learn.

Keep learning kanji, and start trying to read the kanji transcripts of the lessons. I started doing this about a month ago and regret not doing it sooner. You can just use the kana transcript for readings you don't know. You'll find yourself remembering readings for kanji that you know, as well as being able to recognise whole words. It sounds like a bit of a pain cross referencing the transcripts, but it's still less of a pain than reading kana (which is something you'll realise soon enough -- I can't stand it now!).

I'd also recommend getting yourself a decent dictionary, kodansha's furigana one is particularly good -- no romaji in sight, and there are a number of electronic ones you can get for free. Also, look for some simple children's books or manga that contain kanji with furigana, the more you read the easier it gets.

Oh, and forget romaji, that's for people who can't read Japanese!

I really recommend that you get Wakan for both a great dictionary and a kanji learner program. It got a vocab feature also ^_^
