laur81さん,

The only really common Japanese names ending in リI can think of - Kaori, Midori, Yuri and Eri - are female names, but that's mostly coincidence - the り itself has nothing to do with femininity. The only time I can think of when リ really is feminine is in the name Hikari, which is the feminine form of Hikaru (although girls can also be called Hikaru).

But I don't think it would sound weird. I think most Japanese people probably know that アナトリ is a Russian name, and they certainly know that Russian names can end with リ. I don't think it's very weird to Japanese people that the famous Russian male cosmonaut is called Yuri Gagarin, even though Yuri is a female name in Japan.

アナトリさん、

Basically Japanese girls’ names have two or three syllables (えり, かおりand so on) and four syllables’ name is rare for girls.
So I don’t think you need to worry about that.
アナトリ is a cool name.
If you think it’s too long, you can have a nickname. :D

小狼さん、
Thank you for the post.
Yes, Yuri Gagarin is famous and I read his biography when I was a primary school student.

You guys are so helpful, ive totally learned Hiragana with y'all. And am still learning so my question is when it comes to writing names I know now all sounds are in Japanese. so how do youknow what to replace it with? Like with Will you would use "u/ウ"so would you use "u" for any non Japanese sounds. Say for instance "xavier" how do you know what characters replace the English words? Thanks again guys

joshdefreitas さん、
You are welcome.
Your sir name should be フレイタス.

slimispriceless さん、
Unfortunately, we don’t have any rules for that. :(
Some foreign words were written in katakana by our ancestors and they became social custom.
However, especially regarding names, you can choose katakana writing yourself.
Xavier should be ザビア or ザヴィア.
You can choose one of them.

There are two ways to write my name in Japanese, ばん and ヴァン. I'd prefer ヴァン though. :D

How would you write my name... Sarkis?

Would it be サーキス... or サルキス... or something else?

Last name is Einarsson... best guess would be エンアッソン. (the 'Ei' is an 'A' sound... think of the word "reign")

Speedaemon san,

Which is closer pronunciation of your original name, サーキスor サルキス?
You can choose one is close to that.
Regarding your family name, if エンアッソン is close to your original family name, that’s fine. :D
