Beginner Grammar sentences

Postby Zelg » July 23rd, 2013 1:20 am

こんにちは

I'm finally taking another stab at learning some grammar so I can say a few things as I previously didnt feel I had enough of a vocabulary to say anything beyond "that is ____". Of course I'm not too far past that now but any progress is good :)
I do wonder how much of what I attempt to say is how a native speaker might say it. I know I still try to translate word for word from English to Japanese but I'm sure that will decrease with the more I learn. Here it goes.

これはおいしいオレンジでした
That was a delicious orange. (or "That orange was delicious". Not sure if theres a difference in the way you look at that sentence)

わたしは悲しいじゃないです。幸せです。
I am not sad. I'm happy. (not real sure about this one but want to see if I'm on the right track)

私は苺がすきです
I like strawberries.

私は桃がきらいです
I dont like peaches.

I guess thats it for now. One question I had is how to say whether you like (or dont) like someone. I know あなた is one way to say "you" but knowing that "I" and "you" are often left out I wonder what the correct way would be to tell someone you like or dislike them.

ニールさん、
こんにちは :D
Well done!!

これはおいしいオレンジでした
That was a delicious orange. (or "That orange was delicious". Not sure if theres a difference in the way you look at that sentence)
=> Literally, "Thit was a delicios orange" and your Japanese sentence is perfect! :flower:
If it was "thit orange was..." it should be このオレンジは・・・

わたしは悲しいじゃないです。幸せです。
I am not sad. I'm happy. (not real sure about this one but want to see if I'm on the right track)
=> Close!! Negative form of i-adjective 悲しい is 悲しくない, so it'd be
私は悲しくないです。幸せです。

私は苺がすきです
I like strawberries.
=> 私もです :mrgreen: :kokoro:

私は桃がきらいです
I dont like peaches.
=> :shock: そうですか。私は桃も好きです :mrgreen: (= I like peaches too.)

If you want to say like or dislike about someone, you can just use the same pattern and say;
私は、あなたが好きです。 :kokoro:
This can be often said with proper name instead of あなた because it sounds more friendly and close.
あなた is not a very friendly word; it shows certain distance and politeness, but not polite enough to use it to
other people. I know; it sounds weird :mrgreen: We use names instead :wink:

Hope this helps!
