Common shopping cashier phrases

Postby tstim674267 » November 19th, 2012 10:50 am

Konbanwa Japanese learners.

I've just started the beginners course, about 7 months after moving to Japan.

But there are 2 phrases that I get stumped across that gives me a headache - usually the only time I get to communicate in Japanese on my own are at the supermarket or cafe. In these situations where I'm alone I have to second guess what is being asked .... I'd like to know some example sentences, so if anyone can help it'll be MOST appreciated.

1st: would you like a bag?
2nd: is this to drink / eat in or take out?

I know how to reply, but usually I don't recognise the question. Can anyone please give me an example sentence in Japanese for either? I'm sure there's different ways of asking these, but any examples would be extremely helpful.

Thank you so much in advance!

tstim674267-san,
kon'nichiwa! Wow, so you're coming to Japan in almost no time! How exciting :D

There're some possible expressions for those two sentences, but the most common and probable ones you would hear are:
1. Fukuro wa goiriyou desu ka? ふくろ は ごいりよう ですか。
2. Ten'nai de omeshiagari desuka? てんない で おめしあがり ですか。 (= eat in)
Omochikaeri desu ka? おもちかえり ですか。 (= take away)

Hope it helps!

I was caught by this one when not paying attention at the checkout:「割り箸をお付けしましょうか?」"Wari-bashi o o-tsuke shimashou ka?" "Do you want chopsticks?" They might just say お箸 (o-hashi) instead of 割り箸.

Javizy-san,
You're right! Thank you for pointing it out :D
Shop assistants used to automatically give away chopsticks until some years ago, but from the ecology's point of view,
they recently ask us whether or not we want disposable chopsticks. Sometimes, they even don't give us unless we
ask for them.
