The meaning of 'Kii' as in 'Kii Province'?

Postby yayforjapanese » February 5th, 2012 6:33 am

Can someone please give me some idea what 'Kii' means, as in 'Kii Province' or 'Kii Peninsula'?

Thank you to anyone who can offer me any help with this.

The kanji is 紀伊, which is a family name so I don't think it has a 'meaning' as such. The province is probably named after a person or family of some significance.

Thank you. I did not realize it was a family name.

I know that 'ki' -short form- can mean yellow, tree, wood, season, spirit, mood.

Here is a very interesting article, which I tried to read as best I could using Google translate;
http://translate.google.com/translate?s ... 8.E8.A8.98
It seems there may be more than coincidental similarity of pronunciation between 'Kii' and 'ki', as per this remark (a rather broken machine translation);
quote-
"There is a theory as the origin of the name, that was named "Country" tree from the rain forest aspect that many overgrown."
So it makes me wonder, might the name 'Kii' may have to do with 'trees', or loosely, even allude to some of the other meanings of 'ki'?
