Postby Chronitsch » June 20th, 2010 7:09 pm

Hi there

Like the title says whats the meaning of that

for example in these sentences

何人かの人には、迷惑そうな顔をされてしまった。
今日のネクタイ、すてきですね。」と言ったら、佐藤さんはとてもうれしそうな顔をした。

Thank you in advance ^^

そう hooks onto the 'stem' of verbs and adjectives, and expresses that something seems a particular way (with verbs, generally that it seems like something will happen). When I say adjectives, I include na-adjectives, which is what's happening with 迷惑. This そう does, itself, modify with な, so 迷惑そうな顔 is a bothered expression and うれしそうな顔 is a delighted expression (うれし being the 'stem' of うれしい).

In these cases, そうな would mean "that kind of" or "like that". eg. a face/expression like that. OR that kind of face/expression.
