"Yoru" pronounced Yo"DO"?

Postby williamst4334 » June 7th, 2010 10:22 pm

Hi, all. Maybe it's my hearing, but words with the "ru" or "ro" combinations sound like they are being pronounced with a "D." Am I correct? And if so, is this for all combinations using the "R" sound? At first, I thought it was a rolling R (rolling your tongue), but not so. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

williamst4334さん,

The "r" sound in Japanese is difficult to get the hang of at first - it may sound like a "d" at times because you lightly tap the roof of your mouth with your tongue when making the "r" sound, which is similar to how we make a "d" in English. It's like a rolling "r" except you only tap the roof of your mouth once. If you are familiar with the Spanish "r", it is basically the same :)
