need help with understanding a sentence

Postby dminer » September 11th, 2009 9:54 pm

A friend of mine recently received as email that was in both Japanese and English. He sent me the Japanese only part as a challenge because he knows I'm trying to learn. I am still a beginner but I think tackling these more advanced areas really does help my understanding of the language each time (and I get to learn a few new words each time :).

ご迷惑をおかけし申し訳ございませんが、宜しくお願い申し上げます。

I'd really appreciate help with the hiragana for the kanji because WWWJDIC isn't being forthcoming with a few of them.

ご迷惑 = ごめいわく

I haven't found a meaning for "おかけし"

申し訳ございません = もうしわけございません
I would really like to break this one down further because it appears to be two words.

宜しくお願い = よろしくおねがい

and the rest I just can't find anything "sensible". The closest match is "申し上げる (もうしあげる)" and this also looks like two words.

So, putting it all together in hiragana
ごめいわく を おかけし もうし わけございません が、よろしく おねがい もうしあげます。

gomeiwaku wo okakeshi moushi wakegodiimasen ga, yoroshiku onegai moushiagemasu

ご迷惑をおかけし申し訳ございませんが、宜しくお願い申し上げます。

ご ー polite prefix
迷惑をかける - to trouble/bother someone
おかけし - かける in the humble construction お+ます-stem+する, which is used in polite speech. The し here is the ます-stem of する, which can be used in a similar way to the て-form.
申し訳ございません - means 'I am extremely and humbly sorry' (literally there is no (humble) excuse). ございません is simply the けいご version of ない/ありません.
が - but/although
宜しくお願い申し上げます ー humble version of よろしくおねがいします.

You have to translate よろしくおねがいします according to context, but the simple version of the sentence would be something like this:

迷惑をかけてすみませんけど、よろしくおねがいします。
I'm sorry for troubling you, but I really need your help.

Looking at it now, the format of this post is kind of crappy, but hopefully it is helpful.
