"覆われてる"? Hehe, I'm confused!

Hiya, this is my first post here!
This seems like a great active and knowledgeable community, so I thought I could maybe try this question out on you guys! See if you can help me out!

I'm translating a song from Japanese to English to the best of my ability. I do it for practice, I like that most of my Japanese CDs come with a lyrics booklet. I write up the kanji, and translate it and it helps me a lot.

But I do run into things I don't understand!
The lines are:

眩しい日差し浴び　いつもの朝を過ごすはずが
暗い空に覆われてる
itsumo no asa wo sugosu hazu ga
kurai sora ni ou wareteru

I can't seem to get this one, really, and the fact that song lyrics have artistic freedom doesn't help me much! But I'm determined to figure it out!

Does the first line mean something close to "I think we should go through a normal day (but)"?
I believe that I did understand that, right? And that last "ga" is sort of like "but"?

And then I have NO clue about "覆われてる"... I looked it up, and my dictionary came back with:
覆う　　(oou) "To cover, hide, concel, wrap"
As well as some other combinations that aren't relevant.

Is -wareteru a form that I don't know yet? Is it another verb, that my dictionary doesn't contain? And what's with the う chopped off of 覆う in the lyrics?


If anyone could help me out a little bit, I'd be eternally grateful!

Really wish Japanese text didn't break in this forum's previews. It would make everything so much easier.

Anyway. 覆われてる (which is おおわれてる, not おうわれてる btw) is in the passive form. Basically an -areru to whatever. う verbs always grab a わ when they're supposed to add an あ, so, われる. This conjugates normally, so it's われている here.
I'd translate いつもの朝を過ごすはずが as "(We?) should (expectation) pass every day ---, but" where --- is the line before about being bathed in sunlight etc. Then 暗い空に覆われている. In a passive sentence, に can mark the agent of the action, while the subject (unstated here) receives the action. So "(But) (Whatever) is covered/concealed by the dark sky." I guess the subject could be the morning, the sun, us, or whatever else. It's unstated, and it all effectively means the same thing here anyway.

Someone please correct me if I've misunderstood anything.

Quacking, you wrote "day" instead of "morning."

In cases like this it's generally a good idea to provide the title of the song so that we may look up additional lyrics in case of missing context. As Quacking mentioned, the subject could be something unstated, alluded to in previous lyrics, or could also simply be the bit about bathing in the sun's brilliant rays. Usually in songs like this there's some kind of tragic romance, so if I had a say:

眩しい日差し浴び　いつもの朝を過ごすはずが
暗い空に覆われてる

though (I?) should be spending every morning bathing in the sun's brilliant rays (with you?),
(instead I'm) surrounded by a gloomy sky (alone and lonely).

At any rate, the essence of the meaning here is that something that should have been light is instead dark.

Actually, it's a character song from my favorite anime... I guess I didn't want to admit it, I find that I'm a big cliche (the fangirl learning Japanese). Hehe, but if you wanted, I have the full lyrics written out in the original Japanese and romaji, since I usually try to put it through as many methods as possible to help me understand it better.

As you can see, that line I posted is not that far into the song. I don't think I'll have many more problems with the song, but if I do, expect some more questions from me! X3

Hey, it's no trouble. For the record, most of us are pretty cool with the whole manga/anime/fangirl/fanguy sort of attitudes around here. The thing that is really bothersome is when people try to use us as their free translating service without first exerting some kind of effort themselves. Sure, I have my own feelings about the anime subculture and fangirlism, but as far as I care, as long as you're learning Japanese, you're welcome to post here.

I don't know if this was already said but I believe that はず is considered a noun so the が can't mean "but" because you need だ before it. So here is what I think it means:

眩しい日差し浴び いつもの朝を過ごすはずが
暗い空に覆われてる

The expectation of taking in the sun and going through the usual days is concealed by the dark sky.
