Teach Yourself Japanese

Postby Saiyan » September 7th, 2008 4:19 am

I finally ordered my first text book. It was all I could afford for now.

"Teach Yourself Japanese" by H.J.Ballhatchet andS.Kaiser

I'll be receiving it tomorrow and in the meantime, I tried to know about it. But all the reviews talked about the "Teach Yourself" series in general but not this book in particular. So could someone tell me how this book is? All I know for know is that it is doesn't have kana at all and focuses more on speaking. It is 341 pages long so there must be something in it!

Hah - just saw this post and had to reply.

This is the first book I used to start learning Japanese about 8 years ago now brings back a lot of memories.

It's ok but it tends to throw in a lot of vocab which is not used very often and gets way too advanced way to quickly which can be off putting.

I woud instead recommend aiming for something like 4 kyuu and getting a Japanese person to help you learn the syllabus. This is what I did and built up from there to 2 kyuu over the years.
