TESOL online certification???

Hi everybody,

I was enrolled in a class for a certification in TESOL at a local regionally accredited university, but due to a low enrollment rate the class was canceled. I would really like to start working on my obtaining my TESOL certificate as soon as possible, but I'm not sure what online schools are reputable. So far "www.intesolinternational.com" is the only school that I've found that looks legitimate for accreditation, but I would like to be sure I'm not enrolling in a diploma mill....

Does anybody have any recommendations for online TESOL schools, or a list of schools to avoid?

Hi Andy,

I just got TEFL certified in June. I took an intense (really intense) 4 week course in Boston. I think taking a regular (not online) course is better because teaching is something interactive and very much learned by experience (I am generally very much a book learner, but this course really showed me the difference between what I know in theory and what I can do in the front of the classroom). I do understand that it is not always feasible to take a regular course, but I would strongly recommend it if you can.

As far as online courses go, I don't really know anything, but you seem to have the right idea being cautious and checking accreditation. I would think that any program offered through regular schools (universities, community colleges, etc) should be fine.

A few months ago I started the i-to-i 140 hour combined course and have really enjoyed what I’ve done so far (I’m about half way through). I did a fair bit of research into this as of course I wanted to give myself the best opportunity to get work overseas and also find a program that was going to fit into my life. I couldn’t just take 4 weeks off work to do the CELTA… or afford it.

The course I’m doing allows me to study online anytime, and the classroom part was completed over 1 weekend. I’m also enjoying the specialist modules, particularly the one for teaching large classes, as I’m expecting a few of these in China - anything from 40 to 100 students per a class apparently (i-to-i also have a really good forum site – I’d recommend checking it out. I’m hopefully off to China in December to teach, which I’m very excited about. It’s also worth a mention that finding a job shouldn’t be too hard (I hope) – there’s a huge demand over there and hundreds of jobs go up sites like tefl.com & daveseslcafe.com.

Hopeful, I am not replying you too late. There are many online schools and universities that offer online certificates and degree programs and they are all over the internet. It is very important that you enroll in a reputable, accredited online university. Today, getting a certificate in TESOL has become easier than ever. I followed your recommendation, and I have to say that I feel the class definitely prepared me and gave me the confidence to look for a teaching position. I'm currently looking for work in Japan and I hope to be teaching in Japan starting May 2011.

It is true that getting an online certificate is easier today but the need to show determination and self-disciplined during study is equally important. One should avoid getting carried away by the assumption that online certificate is ideal for busy professional ; instead one should first ask a question to oneself that whether one can manage reasonable time for study out of the hectic work schedule. Self-evaluation is as important as the pursuit of right channel for attaining degree. In this regard, an online education website can help student hugely. For example it should first inquire answers of important questions that prospective students are too naive to ask themselves and based on the answers it should recommend appropriate online certificates.

I am currently doing a brilliant course through global-english for TESOL Level 4 (advanced). The turnover for graded work is 2 days or so, and considering the length of each unit this is really impressive. Everything is graded, and every one of your littlest replies or answers is looked at and responded to. Even if you give a perfect answer, you will always get feedback on extra ideas to go along with, say, your lesson idea.

I'm halfway through and so in love with the whole course. I signed up together with someone else, and within 20 minutes of just applying to get the total costs for doing it and giving my best times for contact (I assumed email), I got a call from England (I am in Australia) explaining the process and offering a 20% discount as thanks for getting someone to do it alongside me. And the call, I later realised, was from the woman who actually started the website.

I've learned so much that has really make me passionate about wanting to teach, and reviewed so many important points. I feel really prepared for classroom work.

It's very extensive and in-depth, but for anyone reading this and looking for a good TESOL course, I DEFINITELY say this is great. It's not going to overload you, and you get about 1.5 years to do it (but could wing it in about 1 month if doing it every day).
