今日は、こにちは?

Postby xeondark » May 5th, 2010 2:09 pm

皆さん、
New here, but I've been reading many of the posts. I've been trying to read as much kanji as I know so far, but here's one kanji I kept reading wrong.

今日は

I kept reading this as kyo wa, as in today. I was wondering is this the common for Japanese people to write this greeting as 今日は or こんにちは.

Stick to hiragana for this one. Generally the first option in your IME will be correct (assuming you're not dealing with homonyms). From what I've seen, lots of learners tend to try to use kanji for everything, so you end up seeing kanji that you'd need to go back 60 years to see in writing. There are many times when it's optional, and getting a good sense for this is part of learning to write well.
