There are one or more culture lessons on it with Sakura. Look through them and I'm sure you'll find them. It seems to be very old-fashioned as far as I know.

I was recently in Japan and, even if the relationships between men and women are now more similar to the Western style, I think that the "omiai" is not completely old fashioned.

A recently aired drama (the title is "Ohitorisama") tackle this topic together with the new trend in female world, the idea to have a job career and a family, too.
