The theme for this week will be “Japanese food menus and prices written in kanji”  When you go to a Japanese restaurant, this series might be of some help! 生まぐろ丼 (nama maguro don): 生 means “raw”. まぐろ means “tuna”. 丼 means “a bowl.” Can you picture what this food looks like? Advanced Japanese Lesson – 浴衣(ゆかた;Japanese Summer Cotton Kimono)

八月、日本各地では花火大会が行なわれます。やはり花火は浴衣(ゆかた)を着て見たいもの。あなたは「浴衣」を見たり着たりしたことがありますか? 浴衣の歴史は古く、今から1000年以上前の平安時代発祥だそうです。この頃の入浴は一人でするだけでなく、複数の人と共に湯を浴びることもあったため、薄い着物を着るようになったとのこと。 裏地のついていない着物は「単(ひとえ)」。 昔の人は、この単を下着として着用していました。この下着の名前が「帷子(かたびら)」。「浴衣」は、湯を浴びるときに着る下着=帷子なので「ゆかたびら」、これが次第に「浴衣」と呼ばれるようになったのです。「浴衣」の「衣」は「着物」という意味ですね。 現代では、花火大会だけでなく、夏祭りや縁日、盆踊りなどで着られます。吸水性や肌触りの良い木綿で作られているので、蒸し暑い日本の夏にはぴったり。 ただし、着るときは胸の前の布地の重ね方に注意が必要です。相手から見て左側を上に出して着るのは「左前」と言って、死者の装束と同じ、大変縁起の悪いものになってしまうからです。 ====== In the month of August, fireworks displays are held all over Japan. Advanced Japanese Lesson – 向日葵(ひまわり;Sunflower)

夏を代表する花、「向日葵」。この漢字が読めますか? ヒントは、太陽のような黄色の花ですよ。 そう、「ひまわり」です。 漢字の意味を一文字ずつ説明しましょう。「向」は「向く」、つまり「ある方向を見る」という意味です。「日」は言うまでもなく「太陽」ですね。「葵」は「アオイ」という花の種類を表わしていますが、ひまわりは植物学的にはキク科の花です。 ひまわりの特性として、花が常に太陽の方を向いていることが挙げられます。観察していると、朝のうちは東にある太陽に向かって咲いているひまわりは、お昼頃に頭上に移動した太陽を追いかけるように南を向き、午後には西に傾く太陽と同じように花を西側に傾けるのです。漢字は、このひまわりの動きに着目して用いられているのですね。 「向日葵は 金の油を 身にあびて ゆらりと高し 日のちひ(い)ささよ」という短歌は前田夕暮(まえだゆうぐれ)という人の作品ですが、見事な黄色の花はまるで金色の油を浴びているようです。また、高さが約2メートルにもなるため、見上げていると太陽が小さく見えるほどの迫力です。 ちなみに向日葵の花言葉は「熱愛」「光輝」「あなただけを見つめている」。鮮やかな花にふさわしい情熱的なことばが当てられています。 ===== "向日葵" This is the kanji for a well known summer flower, but can you read it?
