A Breakdown of the Kanji

昔、イングランドにたいへん意地の悪い王様が住んでいた。
Mukashi, Ingurando ni taihen iji no warui ōsama ga sunde ita.
Once there lived a very wicked king in England.

(mukashi: olden days)
意地 (iji: disposition)     mind + state of one’s emotions
(waru(i): bad)
王様 (ōsama: king)     king + polite suffix
(su(mu): to live in)

A Japanese friend says that one should consider the whole phrase 意地の悪い as meaning “wicked.”
