赤道 (sekidō: equator) red + way
The ancient Chinese organized their understanding of the world around the five elements: trees, fire, earth, gold, and water. These elements became associated with colors and directions; “fire” went with “red” and “south.” Located south of China, the equator therefore became associated with redness.
