Although 地 (CHI, JI) often means “ground,” “soil,” or “place,” it means “state of one’s emotions” when it appears in 意地, according to Halpern. He offers 心地 (kokochi: feeling, mood, heart + state of one’s emotions) as another instance in which 地 has this meaning.
