I love the second meaning—the metaphorical take on this compound. Not so crazy about the first meaning, though!
霊長類 (reichōrui: primates) soul + long + kind
Primates are the kinds to have long souls! I guess that means they live a long time. (Or maybe it means that primates get to reincarnate?) We keep running into 霊, and here it is again!
