「れんが」と呼ばれる部首を知っていますか？
漢字では「連火」と表わし、「れっか（列火）」とも呼ばれます。「火」を表わす記号が漢字の下の部分につく場合、四つの点「灬」になるのです。今日は、この「れんが」を部首に持つ漢字を紹介しましょう。まずは「煮」。
「こんろの上で木を燃やす様子」を記号化した漢字で、「火力を集中して火をたくこと」という意味があります。「にる」と読み、食品に水分を加えて火にかけることを指します。

続いて「蒸」。
「水蒸気」「蒸発」という熟語が示す通り、立ち上る小さな水滴を表わしています。このような湯気を食品に当てて調理することを「むす」と言いますね。「くさかんむり」と「烝（上へ熱気が立ち上る意）」で構成されている「蒸」は、もともと草が上へ上へと盛んに伸びることから転じて「むす」という意味になりました。

「煮る」も「蒸す」も火を用いて熱を加えることですが、この「熱」の文字にも「れんが」がついていますよ。上部に書かれる「埶」は発音を表わすためのものなので、「熱」の文字が伝える意味は「火」に集約されます。この漢字は「火が燃えて熱いこと」を表現し、やがて火に関係がなくても熱い様子を表現したいときに用いられるようになりました。心がほてって夢中になる様子を「熱中」と表すのは、その例です。

火は人間にとって必要不可欠なものなので、「ひへん」や「れんが」のつく漢字もたくさん生まれました。

Do you know the radical called renga?
In kanji, it is written as 連火 and is also called rekka （列火）.  Fire is symbolized by four marks 灬 when written on the under part of a kanji.  Today, we will introduce kanji containing the radical renga.

First of all, 煮 “boil”.
This kanji comes from symbolizing “burning wood over a stove,” and also has the meaning of “making a fire by centering heat.” It is read as niru, and means to pour water over food and place it over fire.

Next is 蒸 ”steam.”
Just as the kanji compounds 水蒸気 “vapor” and 蒸発 “evaporate” indicate, it represents small water droplets rising. When this kind of “vapor” is applied to cooking food, it is called “steamed.”  蒸 which is formed by kusakanmuri and 烝 (meaning hot air rising) originally came from plants growing abundantly up and up, and evolved to have the meaning to “steam”.

“Boil” and “steam” both mean to give heat by fire, but the character  熱 also has renga.
The 埶 written on the top part is to represent pronunciation, therefore the meaning for 熱 is concentrated in 火. This kanji represents “fire burning and it is hot”, and eventually came to be used to express heat without any relation to fire.  熱中 is the state of being absorbed or heated on one thing, and is an example of this.

Fire is an absolute necessity for humans, therefore there are many kanji that came about containing hihen and renga.
