Lesson 8.
Kanji That’ll Make You Bright.
You’ve learned the kanji for sun and moon.
Now you need to know how to describe their brightness.
Let’s draw this kanji. This kanji means bright.
We are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the reading.
And remember, there are two readings in Japanese kanji? One is 音読み (on'yomi) the On reading, the other one is 訓読み (kun'yomi) the Kun reading. Long story short, the On reading comes from Chinese and the Kun reading comes from Japanese.
The On reading for this kanji is メイ (mei) and the Kun reading for this kanji is あか (aka) and あき (aki). あか(aka) is in あかるい (akarui) and あき (aki) is in あきらか (akiraka)
Now remember the trick that I was telling about? Let’s look at that now.
Here you see the sun kanji and next to the sun is the moon. See the sun is bright. When the sun shines on the moon, the moon is bright. So together it’s really bright.
Now let’s learn how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order, it’s very important. Start from the sun 1, 2, 3, 4 and the moon 5, 6, 7, 8. Now let’s try it again. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
Now let’s look at some sample words.
Ta-dah.
The On reading for this kanji is mei. Here we have めいげつ (meigetsu) which means bright moon.
Next we have Kun reading. The Kun reading for this kanji is aka in あかるい (akarui) which means bright.
