INTRODUCTION |
Naomi: なおみです。(Naomi desu.) |
Yūichi: ゆういちです。(Yūichi desu.) |
Peter: Peter here. Onigiri Prince part 2. なおみ先生。(Naomi-sensei.) |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: What are we talking about today? |
Naomi: おにぎり王子。でしょ?違う?(Onigiri ōji. Desho? Chigau?) |
Peter: 助けてください。(Tasukete kudasai.) Okay, let me rephrase the question. ゆういちさん、お願いします。(Yūichi-san, onegai shimasu.) What is the story for today? |
Yūichi: 今日はおにぎり王子とおにぎり王女が初めて登場します。(Kyō wa Onigiri ōji to Onigiri ōjo ga hajimete tōjō shimasu.) |
Peter: So today is the first time we meet the rice ball prince and the rice bowl princess. Okay, the grammar point we will be focusing on is |
Naomi: ~たことがある (-ta koto ga aru) |
Peter: So have done something or something has happened. Now the conversation today takes place at |
Yūichi: Of course on the streets. |
Naomi: あ、まだ道なんですね。(A, mada michi nan desu ne.) |
Peter: 貧乏な王族ですね。(Binbō na ōzoku desu ne.) What a poor royal family. The conversation is between? |
Yūichi: 一番 (Ichiban), アオ (Ao), おにぎり王子 (Onigiri ōji) and おにぎり王女 (Onigiri ōjo). |
Peter: Wow so four people. So what kind of Japanese is going to be used here? |
Naomi: 一番 (Ichiban) and アオ (Ao) are close friends. They use casual but when 一番 (Ichiban) talks to the prince, he uses polite Japanese. |
Peter: Okay, so watch for that change. With that said, here we go. |
DIALOGUE |

一番とアオ (Ichiban to Ao) : おにぎり王子とおにぎり王女!追いかけよう!!(Onigiri ōji to Onigiri ōjo! Oikakeyō!!) |
ICHIBAN AND AO: Onigiri prince and Onigiri princess! Let's chase after them. |
おにぎり王女 (Onigiri ōjo) : ねえダーリン、今度、お弁当作るから、ピクニックに行きましょう。(Nee dārin, kondo, o-bentō tsukuru kara, pikunikku ni ikimashō. Mochiron, nakami wa o. ni. gi. ri. yo.) |

ONIGIRI PRINCE: Really!? Can you make some octopus sausages too? |
おにぎり王女 (Onigiri ōjo) : ええっ、タコウインナーは、作ったことがないんだけど。(Ee, tako uinnā wa, tsukutta koto ga nai n da kedo.) |
PRINCESS:What? I have never made octopus sausage. |
おにぎり王子 (Onigiri ōji) : だって、僕のママは、必ずタコウインナーをお弁当に入れるよ。(Datte, boku no mama wa, kanarazu tako uinnā o o-bentō ni ireru yo.) |
ONIGIRI PRINCE: But my mom always makes octopus sausages for my obento. |
一番 (Ichiban) : す、す、すいませーん。(ハーハー) ぼ、僕、お、おにぎり王子の、大ファンなんです。(Su, su, suimasēn. Bo, boku, o, Onigiri ōji no, daifan nan desu.) |

Yūichi: Kind of yes. |
Naomi: Kind of yes. |

Peter: Okay, now this story isn’t over yet. So it will have more and more developments, right? We have – it’s a three part series? |
Naomi: Yes. |
Peter: So I guess we will find out what happens next week. なおみ先生、あの、有名な人と会ったことありますか。(Naomi-sensei, ano, yūmei na hito to atta koto arimasu ka.) So have you ever met a famous person? |

Yūichi: ないですね。(Nai desu ne.) |
Naomi: It must be stressful being a celebrity. |
Peter: Yeah, I think so. |
Yūichi: I think Naomi-san is also a celebrity. |
Naomi: 何言ってるんですか。(Nani itte ru n desu ka.) |
Peter: うん、賛成ですね。何言ってるんですか。皆さん、有名な人と会ったことありますか。(Un, sansei desu ne. Nani itte ru n desu ka. Mina-san, yūmei na hito to atta koto arimasu ka.) Naomi-sensei, you said 有名な人に会ったことありますか (yūmei na hito ni atta koto arimasu ka). I said 有名な人と会ったことありますか (yūmei na hito to atta koto arimasu ka). 両方、大丈夫ですか。(Ryōhō, daijōbu desu ka.) |
Naomi: 大丈夫です。(Daijōbu desu.) Did you see any famous people, did you meet with famous people? みたいな感じ。(Mitai na kanji.) |
Peter: Yeah. So if you have, please let us know on the message board and I am going to try to think. 私も会ったことあるかな。(Watashi mo atta koto aru ka na.) I am wondering if I met some famous people. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Peter: Okay, let’s take a closer look at some of the phrases and vocabulary used in this lesson. |
Naomi: 中身 (nakami) |
Peter: Contents, filling. |
Naomi: 中 (naka) means inside. 身 (mi) means body. So the body inside. |
Peter: How about an example sentence? |
Naomi: 中身は何ですか。(Nakami wa nan desu ka.) |
Peter: What’s in it? What are the contents? |
Naomi: 他にも言い方ありますよね。(Hoka ni mo iikata arimasu yo ne.) |
Peter: So there is another way to say this, much kind of like a simpler way. That is |
Yūichi: 中に、何が入っていますか。(Naka ni, nani ga haitte imasu ka.) |
Peter: What’s in it? What’s inside? 中身は何ですか、っていつ使いますか。(Nakami wa nan desu ka, tte itsu tsukaimasu ka.) When do you use this like what… |
Naomi: 誰かの頭の話とかしてるときとかですか。(Dareka no atama no hanashi toka shite ru toki toka desu ka.) |
Peter: あ、そうですか。(A, sō desu ka.) |
Naomi: コンコン、みたいな。(Konkon, mitai na.) |
Peter: Really? |
Naomi: No. |
Yūichi: おにぎり。(Onigiri.) |
Naomi: あ、おにぎりとか。(A, onigiri toka.) |
Yūichi: There are various kinds of fillings in onigiri such as plums, salmon... |
Peter: 鮭 (shake) and 梅 (ume)... and... |
Naomi: ツナ。(Tsuna.) |
Yūichi: 昆布。(Konbu.) |
Peter: Which is seaweed. |
Yūichi: Yeah. |
Peter: So lots of different – or you could say for donuts. You can say 中身は何ですか (nakami wa nan desu ka). |
Naomi: えっ、ドーナツ中身入ってるの?(E, dōnatsu nakami haitte ru no?) Do you put cream on donuts? Donut is covered with sugar or like some kind of coating but inside it is like just a Do, right? |
Peter: なおみ先生。あの、あんドーナツって聞いたことありますか。(Naomi-sensei. Ano, an dōnatsu tte kiita koto arimasu ka.) |
Naomi: That is more like Japanese food. |
Peter: ゆういちさん…。(Yūichi-san…) |
Naomi: えっ、何、なんでなんでなんで?(E, nani, nande nande nande?) |
Peter: Like Jelly donuts or cream donuts. |
Naomi: ウソ!(Uso!) |
Yūichi: あ~。(Ā.) |
Naomi: Jelly donuts なんてあるの?(“jelly donuts” nante aru no?) |
Yūichi: アメリカじゃないですかね。(Amerika ja nai desu ka ne.) |
Naomi: あるんだ!(Aru n da!) |
Peter: なおみ先生、本当にアメリカ行ったことありますか。(Naomi-sensei, hontō ni Amerika itta koto arimasu ka.) Have you really been to the States? |
Naomi: 次、行きましょうか。(Tsugi, ikimashō ka.) |
Peter: Okay, next we have? |
Naomi: 今度 (kondo) |
Peter: Next time or this time. |
Naomi: For example, また今度 (mata kondo). |
Peter: See you next time. |
Naomi: 今度、映画に行きましょう。(Kondo, eiga ni ikimashō.) |
Peter: Let’s go to a movie some time. Great translation here. 今度 (kondo) equals sometime. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
Peter: Kind of like an English like hey let’s do something you know when you have some time. And no definite date. Just you know the idea or the promise that we should do something together and here 今度 (kondo) although it means next time can be used with no definite, no finite date. Just you know, next time you have some time or some time. また今度 (mata kondo), see you when I see you. See you again soon but it can also mean that like you know there is no real definite plan. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
Peter: Excellent. Next we have |
Yūichi: 必ず (kanarazu) |
Peter: Certainly, without fail. Necessarily, great word. Shows a very high degree of certainty. |
Naomi: 今夜、必ず電話してください。(Kon’ya, kanarazu denwa shite kudasai.) |
Peter: Definitely call me tonight. |
Naomi: そうですね。絶対なんかと似てますよね。(Sō desu ne. Zettai nanka to nite masu yo ne.) I think 絶対 (zettai) and 必ず (kanarazu) are similar. |
Peter: Yeah. 絶対 (zettai) is maybe a little more certain but they are both very close. I mean the degree of separation is not very big if there even is one. Okay, next we have |
Yūichi: 大ファン (daifan) |
Peter: Big fan. |
Naomi: 大きいファンとは言わないんですね。(Ōkii fan to wa iwanai n desu ne.) You can’t say 大きいファン (ōkii fan). 大ファンですね。(Daifan desu ne.) |
Peter: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) Now can we make samples on this please? |
Yūichi: 私はニューヨークヤンキースの大ファンです。(Watashi wa Nyū yōku Yankīsu no daifan desu.) |
Peter: I am a huge fan of the New York Yankees. |
Naomi: なになにの大ファン。(Naninani no daifan.) A big fan of such and such. |
Peter: Yeah, Naomi-sensei. |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: 昨日か一昨日。(Kinō ka ototoi.) Yesterday or the day before. ゆういちさんの大ファンからメール届きました。(Yūichi-san no daifan kara mēru todokimashita.) There was an email from a big fan of Yūichi. |
Naomi: へえ~!男の人?(Hē! Otoko no hito?) |
Peter: いや、違います。女性でした。(Iya, chigaimasu. Josei deshita.) |
Yūichi: 本当ですか。僕の大ファンですか。(Hontō desu ka. Boku no daifan desu ka.) |
Peter: そうですよ。(Sō desu yo.) |
Naomi: あら?(Ara?) |
Yūichi: おっ。とうとう。(O. Tōtō.) |
Naomi: とうとう。(Tōtō.) |
Peter: What is とうとう (tōtō)? |
Yūichi: Finally. |
Naomi: Finally. |
Peter: Now we don’t have his picture. We should put his picture up and 大ファンが増えると思います (daifan ga fueru to omoimasu). Like there will be more big fans. |
Naomi: うーん。そうですね。えっ、何?(Ūn. Sō desu ne. E, nani?) |
Peter: うーん。そうですね。(Ūn. Sō desu ne.) Okay. |
Naomi: よかった、よかった。(Yokatta, yokatta.) |
Yūichi: はい。よかったです。(Hai. Yokatta desu.) |
Peter: It’s a great expression called 今さら (imasara) and it means it’s too late. So Naomi said, oh yeah, good, great but we already know you are truly failing so we can use... |
Naomi: え、どういうこと?(E, dō iu koto?) |
Peter: 今さら。(Imasara.) Too late. We already know how you feel. |
Naomi: What do you mean? |
Peter: It was kind of like you weren’t happy for him. |
Naomi: そんなことないよ。(Sonna koto nai yo.) I am very happy for you. よかったね!ゆうちゃん。(Yokatta ne! Yū-chan.) |
Yūichi: ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.) |
Lesson focus
|
Peter: Okay, today’s grammar point is |
Naomi: ことがある (koto ga aru) |
Peter: Which is used to indicate that one has done something or something happened. Okay, let’s have an example sentence please. |
Yūichi: 王子のコンサートにも行ったことがあるんです。(Ōji no konsāto ni mo itta koto ga aru n desu.) |
Peter: I have been to 王子 (ōji)’s concert. I have been to the Prince’s concert and…yes. |
Naomi: 王子 (ōji)’s concert. |
Peter: Well they have that 王子 (ōji)… |
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.) |
Peter: Anyway. So, been to the concert and in English, it’s kind of comes out to the past perfect. I have been but in Japanese, they don’t have this tense. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
Peter: So it’s represented by this thing there is or I have done this thing. So in this sentence, 行ったこと (itta koto) I have gone, I have went. |
Naomi: がある (ga aru) |
Peter: Exists. Okay, now let’s have one more example with this plain past plus ことがある (koto ga aru). More examples, please. |
Naomi: 作る (tsukuru) is to make. 作ったことがある。(Tsukutta koto ga aru.) |
Peter: What is the plain past, the non-polite past of 作る (tsukuru). |
Naomi: 作った (tsukutta) |
Peter: And this means made. We take the non-past plain and we add it to |
Naomi: ことがある (koto ga aru) |
Peter: To get, have made. |
Naomi: 作ったことがある (tsukutta koto ga aru) |
Peter: Have made and let’s have the whole sentence. |
Naomi: おにぎりを作ったことがある。(Onigiri o tsukutta koto ga aru.) |
Peter: So I have made onigiri. |
Naomi: I am really good at making onigiri. |
Peter: Really? |
Naomi: うん。(Un.) We had a test when I was in elementary school. |
Yūichi: Test? |
Naomi: うん。三角のおにぎりを作らなくちゃいけなかったの。(Un. Sankaku no onigiri o tsukuranakucha ikenakatta no.) We were supposed to make a triangle-shaped onigiri. |
Peter: Wow. |
Naomi: Not the round one. Round one is not acceptable. |
Yūichi: へ〜。(Hē.) |
Peter: Did you pass? |
Naomi: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah with a very high score. |
Peter: I imagine getting left back because you couldn’t make a triangle onigiri. 次の学校に行けない理由が、その…。(Tsugi no gakkō ni ikenai riyū ga, sono…) |
Naomi: Yeah, I am doing the fifth grade again because I couldn’t pass the onigiri test. My onigiri wasn’t triangle enough. |
Peter: Triangular enough. How do you say left back in Japanese? |
Naomi: おちこぼれる?おちこぼれるじゃない、留年か。(Ochikoboreru? Ochikoboreru ja nai, ryūnen ka.) |
Peter: 留年 (ryūnen). Today’s grammar point was the plain past plus ことがある (koto ga aru), to represent have done something. 日本へ行ったことがあります。日本料理を食べたことあります。(Nihon e itta koto ga arimasu. Nihon ryōri o tabeta koto arimasu.) I have been to Japan. I have eaten Japanese food. Let’s quickly compare this to the previous grammar point which was the non-past plain plus ことがある (koto ga aru). For example… |
Naomi: おにぎりを作ることがある。(Onigiri o tsukuru koto ga aru.) |
Peter: There are occasions when I make rice balls. How about if we take something from today’s dialogue and we use yesterday’s grammar point with it? |
Yūichi: 王子のコンサートに行くことがあります。(Ōji no konsāto ni iku koto ga arimasu.) |
Peter: So there are occasions when I go to 王子 (ōji)’s or I go to the prince’s concert. Notice a difference. There are occasions when I sometimes do as opposed to today’s grammar point which if we take what appeared in today’s conversation, we have |
Yūichi: 王子のコンサートにも行ったことがあるんです。(Ōji no konsāto ni mo itta koto ga aru n desu.) |
Peter: So I have been to a prince’s concert. Okay, a very big distinction and one we want to focus on in today’s grammar point. |
Peter: Okay I think that’s going to do it for today. Naomi-sensei, anything else to add? |
Naomi: ゆういちさん、メイドカフェに行ったことがありますか。(Yūichi-san, meido kafe ni itta koto ga arimasu ka.) |
Peter: あ~、ゆういちさん。(Ā, Yūichi-san.) Have you been to a Maid café? |
Yūichi: ありません。(Arimasen.) |
Peter: You haven’t. |
Yūichi: No, I haven’t. |
Peter: Now Yuichi-san answered the question with the verb ありません (arimasen), negative form of the verb ある (aru). So the question is answered not with the verb of the action but rather the verb ある (aru), there is. So one more time the question. |
Naomi: ゆういちさんはメイドカフェに行ったことがありますか。(Yūichi-san wa meido kafe ni itta koto ga arimasu ka.) |
Yūichi: いいえ、ありません。(Iie, arimasen.) |
Peter: No I haven’t and Naomi-sensei, same question for me? |
Naomi: メイドカフェにピーターさん、行ったことがありますか。(Meido kafe ni Pītā-san, itta koto ga arimasu ka.) |
Peter: はい、あります。(Hai, arimasu.) |
Naomi: 何回も?(Nan-kai mo?) |
Peter: なおみ先生と一緒に行ったことあります。(Naomi-sensei to issho ni itta koto arimasu.) So I went together with Naomi-sensei. |
Naomi: With Natsuko and other staff members from japanesepod101. |
Yūichi: 本当ですか。(Hontō desu ka.) Really? |
Peter: So notice how the past plain ことがある (koto ga aru), questions are answered with はい (hai), |
Naomi: あります (arimasu) |
Peter: Or |
Naomi: ありません (arimasen) |
Peter: And this again is the polite form. If there were casual questions, you can answer with |
Naomi: ある (aru) |
Peter: I have. |
Naomi: ない (nai) |
Peter: I haven’t. Nice and compact but again check out the PDF. We have a very nice detailed write up inside of that. |
Outro
|
Peter: All right, that’s going to do for today. |
Naomi: じゃあ、また。(Jā, mata.) |
Yūichi: さよなら。(Sayonara.) |
