INTRODUCTION
(Natsuko desu.)
Peter: Peter here. Likes, dislikes and people we don’t like. Natsuko-san!
Natsuko: Rather controversial, isn’t it?
Peter: Oh yes but that’s what we are all about.
Natsuko: I know.
Peter: When you saw this conversation, what did you think of? Kind of a throwback to what?
Natsuko: Old lessons.
Peter: Yeah I think this one has an old japanesepod101.com written all over it for several reasons. One I think this lesson does a great job of really reinforcing today’s point which is likes and dislikes.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: You are going to hear this often today okay. That’s number one. Number two is, the content and the relationship between the people.
Natsuko: It’s like a flashback.
Peter: So with that said, today’s polite level is Natsuko-san?
Natsuko: Polite Japanese.
Peter: So maybe in between two co-workers?
Natsuko: Maybe.
Peter: Okay not on that intimate terms. So they are still using polite Japanese.
Natsuko: Yes they are using polite language but they are not actually polite to each other. No, just one.
Peter: Well….
Natsuko: One person is not very polite.
Peter: Linguistically they are polite.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now as far as – any way, take a look at conversation. We will be back in a minute. Here we go.

(Watashi wa eiga ga kirai desu.)

(Hē... Dewa, Aihara-san wa nani ga suki desu ka?)
Peter: What? So what do you like?
(Supōtsu ga suki desu. Yakyū ga ichiban suki desu.)
Peter: I like sports. Baseball is my favorite.
Peter: I don’t like people who like baseball.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
(Natsukosan, kyō no kaiwa, dō omoimashita ka?)
(Watashi, yakyū ga sukinahito, suki desu yo.)
Peter: So you like people who like baseball.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Me too. What kind of person is this?
Natsuko: Umm, very strange.
Peter: At least we see eye-to-eye. Really this is very understandable for us.
Natsuko: Umm…
Peter: Okay with that said, there are a few things we have to look at here.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: So let’s take a look at the vocab right away. Natsuko-san. What do we have first?
Natsuko: 映画 (eiga)
Peter: Movie, film.
Natsuko: (slow)えいが (ei ga) (natural speed) 映画 (eiga)
Peter: Next we have
Natsuko: 大好き (daisuki)
Peter: Like very much.
Peter: Now here it’s just the word 好き (suki) like with one in front of it.
Natsuko: 大 (ō)
Peter: The character for big.
Natsuko: Uhoo….
Peter: Big like.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Love. Now yeah we want to point this out. I had a little trouble with this. Now Natsuko-san, can you explain this to me? Sometimes boyfriends and girlfriends say to each other 大好き (daisuki) and this is interpreted as love?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Is it the same level as love because I thought it is like a step below and…
Natsuko: That's a very good question but it’s hard to answer.
Peter: Natsuko-san.
Natsuko: It depends on the situation and you know how you interpret it.
Peter: Their relationship is out there hanging on this balance. Guys out there and girls out there who – their boyfriends only say it to them and girlfriends only say it to them 大好き (daisuki)
Natsuko: Yeah.
Peter: They are throwing out love. (Itoshi teru.) What’s stronger?
Natsuko: Depends. Well 愛してる (itoshi teru) is kind of a very big word for Japanese and it’s usually used for written language rather than in conversation. So I think that’s why people tend to say 大好き (daisuki) instead of 愛してる (itoshi teru).
Peter: Yeah but please know this. Many times it does have that same meaning as to love somebody.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So while you are reading it and while you are looking at a translation of what someone just said to you and it says, like a lot. That’s not really it. They really love you.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Maybe out there somewhere it is like there is some guy who just heard this as like, I can’t believe it. I like it all because I thought you said she really likes me a lot. Alrighty then, let’s just move right along to the next one. Natsuko-san, what do we have next?
Natsuko: 姫 (hime)
Peter: Princess.
Natsuko: (slow)ひめ (hime) (natural speed) 姫 (hime)
Peter: And this one often gets a very polite suffix.
Natsuko: 様 (sama)
Peter: Put them together.
Natsuko: 姫様 (hime-sama)
Peter: Okay we are going through this vocab very quickly because we have a lot to cover in the conversation. Next we have
Natsuko: 野球 (yakyū)
Peter: Baseball.
Peter: And finally
Natsuko: 嫌い (kirai)
Peter: Dislike.
Natsuko: (slow)きらい (kirai) (natural speed) 嫌い (kirai)

Lesson focus

Peter: Let’s take a look at the conversation. We are not going to go over everything. We will start off with, like a movie. Let’s take a look at the second line.
(Hai, daisuki desu.)
Peter: Yes I love them.
(Senshū mo eiga o mimashita.)
Peter: Last week also, I saw a movie. 先週 (senshū) is followed by も (mo) which means last week also movie saw.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now we translate this as last week I also saw a movie. This is followed by
(Ototoi mo mimashita.)
Peter: ‘The day before yesterday also saw’ translate this as the day before yesterday, I also saw a movie. I also watched a movie followed by
(Ashita mo mimasu.)
Peter: I will watch one tomorrow also and the comparison here is between the past 見ました (mimashita) and the non-past. In Japanese, there are two tenses, past and non-past and here the non-past is
Natsuko: 見ます (mimasu)
Peter: And the reason for this is, we are using polite Japanese. So this is polite Japanese. Next.
(Sukina eiga wa animēshon desu.)
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: And here it is placed in front of the movies. So we have
Peter: This is marked by
Natsuko: は (wa)
Peter: The topic marking particle and followed by
(Animēshon desu.)
Peter: The movies I like are animation is what we have here. And now, let’s take a look at some Japanese movies because in the next line, we got some Japanese movies. Natsuko-san.
(Senshū wa tonari no totoro.)
Peter: Last week and give us that title one more time.
(Tonari no totoro.)
Peter: And this is My Neighbor Totoro.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now I don’t know if that’s the English title but that’s the translation and Natsuko-san I have to confess, I don’t know this movie.
Natsuko: Oh really?
Peter: Help me out here.
Natsuko: It’s a very famous – have you heard of Miyazaki Hayao? It's okay.
Peter: You are going to give me a lot of trouble here Natsuko-san.
Natsuko: He is a really famous movie director for animation movies in Japan.
Peter: And how old is this movie and what’s it about?
Natsuko: I think it was released more than 10 years ago.
Peter: And what’s it about?
Natsuko: It’s about young sisters moving into a house in the suburbs and meeting these very strange animals living next door. Well not living, like next door.
Peter: Sounds like my first apartment.
Natsuko: Okay, okay Ibaraki prefecture all right.
Peter: Yeah. I like that for a reason. (Ototoi wa?)
(Ototoi wa Sen to Chihiro)
Peter: Okay and this was a very well known movie throughout the world.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: This is kind of after he is known around the world. I am sure, like some fans out there are going to get angry. Obviously he was known throughout the world but okay let me rephrase, mainstream world because this movie was huge everywhere. Even in the US, it sold..
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Relatively well compared to how Japanese movies usually sell.
Natsuko: Yes very.
Peter: Okay for those of you who haven’t heard about it, Natsuko-san, give us a quick description.
Natsuko: It’s a fantasy movie about this young girl somehow entered into another world where their parents turned into pigs, were day? and she had to rescue them and she starts working in this strange 湯屋 (yuya) Was that some kind of a hotel or something? It was very strange but very interesting. Lots of metaphors.
Peter: And this was a tremendous movie in Japan.
Natsuko: Smash hit.
Peter: Unbelievable. So if you want to just watch a movie that most Japanese know, this is definitely one. There is another movie mentioned which is
(Mononokehime)
Peter: Which is Princess
Peter: And this one I have seen.
Natsuko: Oh really?
Peter: Yeah, very interesting. The humans are definitely the bad guys in this one but yeah it’s a very interesting story about the forest and…
Natsuko: Spirit and spirits. All the spirits living in this strange forest.
Peter: Yeah, very interesting movie. Okay running out of time here. So there is one more point we want to cover and this is the line about her not liking people that like baseball and this is even confusing in English.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So let’s go over this line once.
Peter: So first we have 私 (watashi) marked by
Natsuko: は (wa)
Peter: The topic marking particle. Okay so we are going to stop there. The topic is I. So I, we are going to leave that alone for a second. Then we are going to switch gears and remember, we are going to talk about the person that she doesn’t like.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: From here until we hit a person, it’s going to be a description.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: We have
Natsuko: 野球が (yakyū ga)
Peter: Baseball marked by the subject marker が (ga)
Natsuko: 好きな (sukina)
Peter: Like and the な (na) comes in here because it’s describing the person. So this whole statement is describing the person. In English, people who like describing people. In Japanese, it is the other way around. It comes before the noun. So baseball, like people.
(Yakyū ga suki na hito)
Peter: People that like baseball.
Natsuko: が (ga)
Peter: Here subject marker again because now we are referring back to the original topic. Then we have
(Kiraidesu.)
Peter: I the topic. Don’t like people that like baseball. So we have to start in the beginning, jump to the end and then work our way back.
Natsuko: Pretty confusing.
Peter: No it’s not that confusing. Listen, just start in the beginning 私は (watashi wa), then jump to the end I don’t like, I hate and then work your way back. People that like baseball. Exactly so, that’s it.
Natsuko: Get it?
Peter: Getting a grasp of this lesson is really going to be useful down the road and plus all the movie knowledge in there.
Natsuko: Right.
Peter: Natsuko-san. Have you seen all these movies?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Yeah I have seen one on one for three.
Natsuko: The other two are, like good too.

Outro

Peter: All right. So I have my homework cut out for me. All right, so that’s going to do for today.
(Ja, mata ashita ne.)
Peter: See you tomorrow.
