INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 24. Politely Asking Someone to Do Something, Part 1.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern to politely ask someone to do something.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "Please wait."
Risa: 待ってください。 (Matte kudasai.)
Risa: [slow] 待ってください。 (Matte kudasai.)
Eric: This pattern to politely ask someone to do something has 2 elements. First, the te-form of the verb meaning "to wait."
Risa: 待って (Matte-).
Eric: Second, a word literally meaning "please give me."
Risa: ください (kudasai)
Eric: When it's used after the te-form of a verb, it makes a polite request. "Please do something." Altogether, we have, "Please wait."
Risa: 待ってください。 (Matte kudasai.) [slow] 待ってください。 (Matte kudasai.) [normal] 待ってください。 (Matte kudasai.)
Eric: To politely tell someone to do something, first state the te-form of a verb or verb phrase, and then add
Risa: ください (kudasai)
Eric: All together,
Risa: 待ってください。 (Matte kudasai.)
Eric: So remember to politely ask someone to do something, just add
Risa: ください(kudasai)
Eric: to the te-form of a verb or verb phrase.
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "Please speak slowly." First, the verb phrase meaning "to speak slowly" with the te-form of a verb.
Risa: ゆっくり話して (Yukkuri hanashite-).
Eric: Second, a word literally meaning "please give me."
Risa: ください (kudasai)
Eric: When it's used after the te-form of a verb, it makes a polite request. "Please do something." Altogether we have...
Risa: ゆっくり話してください。 (Yukkuri hanashite kudasai.) [slow] ゆっくり話してください。 (Yukkuri hanashite kudasai.) [normal] ゆっくり話してください。 (Yukkuri hanashite kudasai.)
Eric: "Please speak slowly."
[pause]
Risa: ゆっくり話してください。 (Yukkuri hanashite kudasai.)
Eric: How do you say, "Please write your name here?" To give you a hint, "to write" is...
Risa: 書く (kaku). [slow] 書く (kaku). [normal] 書く (kaku).
Eric: "Please write your name here."
[pause]
Risa: ここに名前を書いてください。 (Koko ni namae o kaite kudasai.) [slow] ここに名前を書いてください。 (Koko ni namae o kaite kudasai.) [normal] ここに名前を書いてください。 (Koko ni namae o kaite kudasai.)
[pause]
Risa: ここに名前を書いてください。 (Koko ni namae o kaite kudasai.)
