If you are at the top end of JPLT level 5 or a bit above, a great way I've found of expanding vocabulary and understanding is NHK news stations web news for Japanese kids. The stories are written out and you can also listen to the broadcasts. Afterwords you can rate the story on how interesting it was and whether it was easy to understand. The topics cover everything from local news to international happenings. http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/
