Beware of iOS6 on iPad!

Postby mrsspooky5154 » September 20th, 2012 9:46 pm

I have all of my lesson notes on my iPad that I use for study.

I upgraded my iPad to iOS6 yesterday. This morning I tried to study my lesson notes and all the kana and kanji were gone.

I'm using GoodReader, but it's the same if I view them in iBooks and other pdf viewers.

Everything looks fine still on my Mac.

So if you have your japanesepod101.com lesson notes on an iPad, do NOT upgrade to iOS6!! At least not until they fix this problem.

I posted about it in Apple Communities and one other person who's using it for their japanesepod101.com lesson notes is having the same problem.

It's ok, Apple broke it.

Hi Natsuko-san,

Someone told me that the Lesson Notes Lite DO contain the kana and kanji on iOS6, but those aren't the ones that are gathered by the feed. This may be very common with pdfs, to not have the fonts embedded in them. japanesepod101.com's pdfs are really the only ones I have on my iPad.

It's something that was working perfectly until the new iOS update broke it. I was concerned about other listeners doing the same thing as I am getting caught in Apple's update. I don't know if there is a workaround that doesn't involve opening all of the pdfs and doing a 'save as' (I think as a text, that option is out of the question for me unless I can do bulk updates).

If I find a workaround or if/when Apple fixes it, I will post and let you all know. If your technical team has a workaround for iOS, that would be awesome!

Thank you very much,
Spook

Ouch! I just signed up for a subscription and it's too late for me. I think I would have upgraded to iOS 6 anyway... well I don't have a bunch of lesson notes yet that I was looking forward to studying. I hope this gets fixed soon.

Just in case you've already updated

Postby mrsspooky5154 » September 22nd, 2012 6:13 pm

If the warning came too late and you already updated your iPad to iOS 6 and now can't see the Japanese characters in your pdfs, please report it here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ibooks_ios.html

Hopefully not too many people will be affected, but those that are should report it so they can fix it.

Thanks!

Remove the dot at the end

Postby mrsspooky5154 » September 22nd, 2012 7:09 pm

I just looked at the link. Probably my fault, but the period at the end of the sentence was included with the link.

Remove that then reload the page. I'll see if I can edit the response and fix that.

I work in a support organization and I can tell you, the more people they hear from about a problem the more likely it is they'll fix it - quickly.

I'm posting the link all over the place - I seriously doubt Japanesepod101.com is the only one putting out pdfs with Japanese text that's having this issue. Who knows what other languages are also affected by this.

If you're a Mac user I think I have found a workaround for this problem. Open the PDF you want to view in Preview on your Mac and then select Print from the File menu. In the print dialog click the PDF button in the lower-left corner and choose "Save as PDF..." and then save the new PDF. Then transfer the PDF to your iPad and you should be able to see the Japanese fonts again. I don't know if this will work for every PDF or not but the few that I've tried from Beginner Season 4 have worked.

Heard about that...

... but there are 1,463 of them on there, not a practical workaround I'm afraid. :(

this stinks

Well I can print to PDF on my computer (Windows) because I bought the full Adobe Standard version of Acrobat. I really don't want to do that though. It's a few extra steps which is annoying and also the quality of the PDF isn't going to be as good - in terms of resolution and zooming etc, nothing beats computer fonts.

I tried making my iPad Japanese language and it still fails to show the PDFs correctly. I am guessing that if you have an iPad in Japan it doesn't have this bug. Because THEN it would be fixed asap. As it is, not that many Americans study Japanese for Apple to really care is my guess. Bug? Sure. We'll get it in the next iOS update. Should be out in say 4 months or so.

I have a Mac so I'm looking into whether I can script a bulk update. It won't be too bad to reupload everything to the iPad, it's just getting the fonts actually embedded into the pdf.

I mean.... It makes sense to use the OS's fonts for that. It greatly reduces the size of the file. Plus, for some reason I want to say it may be the default to save files depending on the fonts in the OS.

Yeah, I tried changing the system font to Japanese too and it didn't help me either. :\

This is the first time I've ever had Apple break something on me - guess my luck ran out.

broke out my lovely Google tablet I bought over the summer and haven't used aside from a little bed time net surfing. The PDF's look just fine on it. maybe I'll get a good pdf apply for it and use it instead. What a waste of a retina display ipad /cry.
