Recommendations - other mobile phone apps

Since the Android is out, I'm curious to see if programmers make apps for this platform like they do the Apple one.

Has anyone bought an Android phone, and found Japanese related apps for it?

I have an Xperia x10i that I'd like to use more Japanese study, but I am still lacking really good tools.

Currently I have aeDict on there as my dictionary. It's using Jim Breen's dictionary files so the content is pretty good. It's actively developed and the UI and features are all great.

Previously I used a Windows Mobile PDA and 'Stackz' as my flashcard application. This isn't available for many other mobile platforms unfortunately and I'm really disappointed to not be able to use it. I've tried AnkiDroid but it's not quite there yet. UI is very minimal and synching is not yet finished.

I'd also love to hear others' experiences studying Japanese on Android.

BeyondPod for Android works well for grabbing the lessons. Basically, any PodCatcher that supports logging in will work, I just happened to find BeyondPod awhile back and stuck with it.

You can set the feed to play oldest to newest (Great for catching up, which I am in severe need of right now ), as well as newest to oldest (Good for playing new lessons + bonus tracks in the proper order)

The only feature missing, in my oppinion, is that you can't view the "Lyrics" (IE: In-lesson transcripts).

Other than that, it can use its own built-in viewer for non-music files, or whatever app you've set to default in Android

I have since updated to Android 2.2 and downloaded Flash from the Marketplace. Since then, the website acts like it doesn on a normal PC: You can go to a lesson, hit Play, and it plays the audio. No downloading or extra steps needed.

I spent hours learning Kana and Kanji using an Android app from http://www.japan-activator.com/, before starting with pod101. Made it much easier to get into the pod101 vocab flashcards having done that first...

Currently using Jsho as dictionary on Android. It's quite new but it's got a nice and functional UI. Also recommend Obenkyo for studying kanji and kana.

Hi there, here some good programs I use for the Android platform

- jed : a free and very complete dictionnary
- simeji : japanese input (ime)
- kanji recognizer : write kanji stroke by stroke, can be connected to simeji
- wordpower : nicely done flashcard system with pics and sounds, containing 2000 words or so
