New Chrome Plugins

Postby bloritsch » June 28th, 2010 7:43 pm

Google Chrome is a very fast browser, with JavaScript performance that is very impressive. It also has a number of great features such as the ability to translate a website if it detects the language is different from your normal one. However, if you are trying to learn how to read that language you might not want to translate the whole page. It now has two plugins to really help out:

    Furigana Injector 1.0
    Rikaikun 0.8

Furigana Injector adds the reading in hiragana above the kanji--just like Furigana. The plugin is adjustable so that as you become more proficient you can have it inject fewer and fewer readings. You can have it inject the reading for everything but the top 100 most common Kanji all the way down to everything but the top 2500 Kanji. The default is set at everything but the top 500.

Rikaikun is Rikaichan's itoutou. Rikaichan remains faithful to Firefox, but her little brother hooked up with Google Chrome. He's a lot faster than Rickaichan because of Chrome's lightning fast architecture. However, he's not quite as mature as Rickaichan yet. The authors are trying to let Rickaikun work in text boxes, but he's not ready for that just yet. I'm sure it's a matter of time.

With these two new plugins, you will have the same help you were used to with Firefox. The only difference is that the browser is a lot faster, and Rikaikun loads more quickly than his oneesan.

Another Chrome extension you should check out if you're learning Japanese is the NihongoUp Kanji Quiz. You must have a NihongoUp account to use it, but that's free, and it'll the allow you to SRS review kanji right from your browser, track your progress with a colourful kanji grid, etc.
design is like a puzzle... I'm just trying to solve it now
