Can anyone recommend some good J-Rock?

Postby esp » April 25th, 2006 6:20 pm

I'm mainly like rock music som i'm interested to know if anyone knows some good J-Rock bands I could listen to. I like most kinds of rock but I don't really want anything too heavy, something with more of an indie kind of sound like coldplay or maybe something a bit heavier like a Foo Fighters kind of style.

Well, you can't go wrong with Hotei. Quite bombastic, but always with a sense of humour. If you can track down the songs Vampire or Russian Roulette then those are a good start.

If you like indie stuff: The Brilliant Green are very listenable. I also liked a band called Chatter 8th Woman, but it's proving very difficult to find anything about them recently. They may have split up for all I know.

I've always liked Janne Da 'Arc.

The Pillows x 20. If you haven't heard them yet, pick up the anime FLCL. They are the greatest.

Also, Asian Kung-Fu Generation and ORANGE RANGE.

Ersby, is Hotei the one who made the song in Kill Bill just before the battle with the Crazy 88 ? Are we talking about the same guy ?

He's a little bit older, but Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi (長渕剛) isn't bad.
And for Okinawan rock, check out "THE BOOM".

quruli (くるり) is a great group -- not exactly sure how to describe them, maybe indie rock?

Another vote for the Pillows. In addition to the FLCL OST, check out 'Penalty Life.'

The FLCL OSTs are great, but you really should pick up their albums to really get a full taste of the pillows. Runners High and Penalty Life are two of my favorites. Thank You My Twilight is also very good. Well, actually they're all good, but those are my favorites.

Not really J-rock, but the OST for Jet Set Radio and JSRF are brimming with really catchy tunes.

The only Pillows albums I can find are 'Penalty life' , 'Flcl: Original Sound Track 3', 'My Foot' and 'Happy Bivouac' would you recommend any of these? Which is the best in your opinion?

Penalty Life is probably my favorite out of those. My Foot (their latest) and Happy Bivouac are also very, very good. HB is a bit more "quirky" though, especially the title track. The FLCL OST 3 looks like it has a really nice selection, but it's only a small sampling and you can get all those songs and more on the other albums.

You probably won't be able to find the older albums unless you import them, and that's going to be VERY expensive. I could possibly, erm, "hook you up" with the others if you'd like.
