Viewing PDFs on iPod Touch

I have the Touch which has web-browsing capabilities. The Lesson Notes and Kanji Close-Up PDF files display just fine on my PC, but when using the Safari browser on the IPT, I cannot see the kana or kanji. The logos, English, and romaji (mostly) show up, but no Japanese text. (I say mostly because even some of the Western alphabet characters don't display either.) Anyone else run across this? I should add that the Jpod101 website does display Japanese characters just fine, which makes me wonder if it's the PDF format.
