What's my name in Japanese? (make requests here!)

Yeah I have to agree, kinda opposite to you, I find katakana hard and hiragana easier. Kanji is even harder! haha. I guess it depends what you are used to seeing or using.

How long have you been learning Japanese for?

i didn't have any formal training or lessons so there isn't a date that i can point to and say that's the day i started learning japanese... but my first contact with japanese was erm... about the time where Squaresoft's Final Fantasy 5 hit the market. It was fully japanese at that time and there was no english translation for it (now they have the anthology so it's cool).

until around last year, my japanese was just that. for games and reading item names and menu. =P then jp101 happened and my japanese language just had a big leap.

Dougen, depends on the pronunciation... if "doug" is like "douglas", then it might look like this, ダゲン.

and then put them together and you get ベン　ダゲン

We named our newborn son Akemi. We are aware that this is mostly a girl's name but it sounds good in english and french, our spoken languages.

However, I heard somewhere that there could be ways to spell Akemi using Kanji which could make it sound more male than female. Any ideas?

from the IME, akemi gives a few options,
あけみ could be 明美 or 明海

the meaning for the first is like "bright beauty" (direct translation). obviously a girl's name.

the second, if the meaning is similar to the chinese word (many people tell me it is), means "bright sea" (also direct translation). i suppose this would be the boy version of あけみ.

there are other kanji that comes up when i type あけみ but they don't look like they are good words.

I would guess it's マッテアス・グスタフッソン but without hearing it, it's a bit more difficult.

Thank you for the help jemstone and kc8ufvさん, I belive that
"mat-tee-as - マッティアス" would be the most accurate going by the pronunciation.

So I basically say my name as it is then?

edit: actually, I don't know if it makes any difference, but you could say that one of my "t"'s are silent and that it then would be pronunced as ma-tee-as.
Mattias is the swedish version of Matthew in english.
