made an app to practice Kanji drawing for JLPT

Postby attwad » July 23rd, 2007 10:22 am

Hello everyone!

I'm back with another app to help you learning your kanji for jlpt!

Here is what it looks like:

Image

And what id does:

-> allow you to show/mask the example kanji with stroke order
-> display the meaning of the kanji
-> display the On'yomi and Kun'yomi of the kanji

prerequisites (all free):
to make it work you need to install the font "KanjiStrokeOrder" available here:
http://www.users.waitrose.com/~potato/KanjiStrokeOrders.zip
and of course you must have JAVA >= 5.0 installed on your PC/MAC/UNIX.

Here is the link to the App:
http://nakedvampjem.free.fr/jlptKanji.jnlp

For the moment, only the 4th level of the jlpt is included (103 kanji), I'm working on the 3rd but it's quite a mess so it'll take time ;)

Anyway have fun and leave me your feedback!

Cool program!! Works great on the Mac, just wish I had something else other than a mouse for drawing.

This works great for me, though it isn't actively developed any longer:

http://www.leafdigital.com/software/renshuu/

It tracks your progress, though it doesn't tell you stroke order.
By the way, I made it to Japan

you can get a tablet for your computer. Does that work?
Email me with different things to help me with reading and writing. The language speaking is easy with me, but the Japanese writing system is hard for me.

Nope, and no need to buy one just for this.

It works with a tablet, I don't see why it shouldn't work untmdsprt...
but I admit unless you're a graphic designer don't go buy one for this the prices are still too high :(:(

I really have no need for a tablet.

Attwad: can you do something like this program? I've been trying to use it but it is so unstable!!! http://japaneselearningtools.com/index.html

I even put Virtual PC on my Mac with both Win2000 and XP, with Excel 2003. Great program, but very unstable. The Mac version of Excel won't even run it. I believe it's because of Virtual Basic.

The original author started working on a java version. This was back in April. No word since then. :(

Please take a look at it and see if it's doable in Java. I love it for the fact that it has all the kanji, and it makes you type the spelling in, not just look at it. I haven't been able to find anything else like it.

Thanks!!!

I agree, this is a great program, but I too have difficulties using it. Only once in a while I get "lucky" and it saves successfully. There's a fix from Microsoft, but it's around $40 USD, which is ridiculous.

It's a great macro though, and if someone could make something similar (that doesn't crash everytime!), I too would have great use for it. I've been able to get to JLPT 3 vocab with it (would've been much farther if I could save properly!), and it has been a great help in solidifying kanji recognition, meanings, and readings.

So....I second this request! :)

I've found a workable solution. I copied the word list into ProVoc, and have created my own flash card system.

This is only for Mac users, but I'm sure PC users can find similar flash card programs. If you want the file I've created, send me an email at untmdsprt at mac dot com. (Mac users only!)

Ok, after playing with the file I've created, I really like it. The written part of ProVoc is almost like the Excel@Japanese minus the crashing. I have separated each level based how it was in the spreadsheet, so you can practice only the levels you need.

Nice program.... is it just drawing or does it check your drawing?

[I deleted the message....should've been sent in a PM. Just wasn't thinking.]
