How do you type in japanese letters?

Hi! I'm only new here, but I was wondering how everyone knows how to get the Japanese letters to come up in the forums..do you type with particular letters on the keyboard..?

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I'm very curious and I couldn't find a similar question or anything at the FAQ.

Well it might depend on which operating system you use.

Generally, once you have Japanese support installed and selected, you type in romaji and it comes up first in kana and then converts to kanji. You need to be careful about the kanji the machine selects for you though.

I believe in Windows this is an optional install.
In MacOSX it's part of a full install that comes on new computers.
