Ideas for a story on Japan

Postby MikeCassidy » June 27th, 2006 1:26 pm

I'm looking for ideas for a story about Japan that does not involve Tokyo or Kyoto.
Walking the pilgrimage around Shikoku is a great idea but I doubt I could get 2 months off and I know my wife and cats would not be happy about my leaving for two months.

I could do an abbreviated tour two weeks or so of piligrimage.

I also considered climbing Mt. Fuji; but that is a bit like Tokyo.

It does not have to be hiking just something that is not Tokyo.

I would consider Tokyo only if the idea is something unusual; very unusual.

Most stories on Japan come in two varieties: Tokyo and Kyoto.

I have two problems:

1. We just did a 'Tokyo' story so I need an idea that that will convince them that we need to ran another story on Japan.

2.That I should write it [they should send me tro Japan]. My normal function is overseeing that the magazine is printed and gets to the reader. Writing is not one of my skills,

So I need a good idea.

Thanks

I take it you're a travel writer?

Some amazing places that are less-visited by foreign tourists are:
Yaku-shima 屋久島 (off southern Kyushu)
Shiretoko Peninsula 知床半島 (northern Hokkaido)
The Northern Alps 北アルプス (near Nagano)

Just Google for them.

It's touristy, but you can also stay overnight with the monks on Koya-san 高野山.

Don't bother with Fuji. There's absolutely nothing interesting going on there. Nikko 日光and Kamakura 鎌倉 are much nicer destinations in the Tokyo area.
