Confused about where to put counters

I know how to form simple sentences like "i have 2 books", but get confused in more complicated sentences, like "i have 2 books, 3 pens, and 5 pencils".

hon ga nisatu to pen ga sanbon to enpitu ga gohon arimasu

I've also seen #-counter "no" noun:

nisatu no hon to sanbon no pen to gohon no enpitu ga arimasu
