Translation help?

Postby Annihilator » July 3rd, 2008 8:08 pm

Ok, so a Japanese man and I have been talking a little bit over the internet. I'm having trouble understanding his last message, though:

あなたの自己紹介の日本語もとても上手ですよ。
日本語は少し言葉が変でも相手に意味は伝わるので、恐れずにTRYしてくださいね。

Your self-introduction in Japanese is very good!
Japanese speech is a bit weird, but...something about just trying it even though it's hard?

Can anybody help me out here?

恐れる = To fear/be afraid of

But it has -ずに on the end, which means "without doing"..恐れずに
So the last part is, "without being afraid, please try".

I think 相手(あいて) in this sentence refers to the person on the other end of the conversation (hypothetically speaking), and 伝わる I think means to "be transmitted"..

So..

日本語は少し言葉が変でも相手に意味は伝わるので、恐れずにTRYしてくださいね。

In Japanese a few words are strange but to the other person the meaning is transmitted, so without being afraid please try.

Or for a more fluid English translation "even if [your] Japanese is a bit weird the message will be conveyed [lit. meaning will be transmitted], so please don't be afraid to try it!"
