Help needed with web fonts

Postby rshiplett » September 29th, 2012 10:14 am

At my Kanji by Grade pages at http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-grades.html I have been using the following font-family (in Curl - this is the CSS equiv.)

font-family: "HanaMinA", "Meiryo UI", "Meiryo", "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Arial Unicode MS", unifont, meiryo, sans-serif;

I recently moved to Win 7,so I now know the meiryo option - the GNU unifont should help some linux users of Firefox browser - but what would others (especially Mac Book) like to see ?

If you have a favourite free font for kanji, please let me know.

Thanks

UPDATE I am trying to get all my app's and pages to use the following as font-family ( Curl applet option and CSS attr.)
CURL
font-family="HanaMinA, Kochi Mincho, Hiragino Mincho Pro, Meiryo, SunSim,
Liberation Serif, DejaVu Serif, Arial Unicode MS, serif"
CSS
font-family:"HanaMinA", "Kochi Mincho", "Hiragino Mincho Pro", "Meiryo", "SunSim",
"Liberation Serif", "DejaVu Serif", "Arial Unicode MS", serif;

HanaMinA - my preferred free Hanazono font (but, I have to load it at runtime for a Curl linux box page or app, which is SLOW.)

Kochi Mincho - should be on an Ubuntu box ?

Hiragino Mincho Pro - should be on a Mac displaying Japanese ?

Meiryo - should be on Windows 7 Home

SunSim - should be on Windows XP and perhaps earlier ( and some others ?)

DejaVu Serif - a likely Ubuntu default ?

Arial Unicode MS - a Win XP Unicode default ?

Entering characters in some particular CJK codepage under linux/unix is a whole app topic in itself ... ;-) readline if you will not "read my lips : no new codepages !" ;-)

When I click on any of the links on that page I get the "CURL RTE Add-in required" display. However, I have CURL installed so I don't know why I'm seeing it. This is happening in Firefox and in Opera. Did something change on the website?

Update: I think it's an issue with the VBScript on the http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-grades.html page. The script should redirect the browser if the CURL plug-in is detected, but I think the detection is failing. If I by-pass the page and go directly to one of the linked pages (for example, http://www.aule-browser.com/kanji/kanjidic2-grade-1-curl.html), I see the CURL page as expected.

Hi,
I will try to get on top of that ... I hit more problems the more hardware and browsers I test against ...

Thanks

I have tried a change for the page with Grades 1 - 4

Could you confirm that HTML is correct ?

I have not changed the re-direct script but the target page ... some changes work in one browser but not the other (thanks Netscape - Microsoft "browser wars" in our back-yards ... )

thanks

Robert
PS
I have many new pages in the wings ready to link with ON-YOMI / kun-yomi and much else )

Yes, these pages are working fine for me on Windows 7 using Opera 12.02 and Firefox 14.0.1.

Edit: and also Firefox 16.0.1

thanks

I added a Curl update with ON-YOMI and kun-yomi today and now I will go back to these "grades" pages.
