Chigusa: Alright, Peter, is it possible to improve your speaking on your own? |
Peter: That’s a great question, Chigusa. In an ideal world… you’d want to get feedback from a teacher or a native speaker. |
Chigusa: Right. |
Peter: But, if you don’t have access to a teacher or a native speaker… or maybe you’re not quite ready to speak with actual people, there are ways you can improve on your own. So, let’s jump in. The first one is… |
Chigusa: One: Focus on the most common words and phrases |
Peter: If you want to start speaking sooner than later, then it makes more sense to learn the common words and phrases that are used in conversations |
Chigusa: Right, instead of trying to learn ALL of the words… which takes a lot of time. |
Peter: Exactly. And this is actually called the 80/20 rule, where instead of trying to learn everything, focusing on the small 20% - just the common phrases - gets you 80% of the results… or progress that you need as a beginner. |
Chigusa: So the 20% of work gives you 80% of the results |
Peter: Precisely. |
Chigusa: So, how can you learn the most common words and phrases? |
Peter: Listeners, if you’ve already taken our lessons, you’re already picking up the must-know words and phrases along the way. But, you can also learn them with our free top 100 core words list… and you’ll find that on the site. |
Chigusa: Two: Increase your input or exposure to the target language |
Peter: So, think of a song that you've heard over and over. And… you know it by heart simply because you’ve been exposed to it so many times, right? Chigusa, which song do you know by heart? |
Chigusa: A lot of Disney songs like A Whole New World from Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast |
Peter: Those are great examples. And this applies to languages as well. If you increase your exposure to the language… all the words and phrases you hear will become more natural to you… |
Chigusa: And you’ll be able to use them in conversations. |
Peter: Again, if you're already learning with us, you’re already being exposed to the language. |
Chigusa: But, you can also increase your exposure by repeating the lessons… taking more lessons… |
Peter: Or you can listen to just the dialogue tracks which give you the lesson conversation. |
Chigusa: Peter, how about listening to music and watching TV shows in your target language? |
Peter: TV shows are another great example. In fact, Netflix makes this super easy with the ability to go back and forth between the English and the target language so you can actually understand what the character is saying and then you can hear it in the target language. I use this technique quite a lot. You can even add the subtitles so that you can understand what’s being said and listen and immerse yourself first, or listen after. So, Netflix is really a powerful language learning tool… if you apply it that way. Okay, let’s move on to part 3. |
Chigusa: Three: Use our Free conversation cheat sheets. |
Peter: And this is something you can apply right away. Our conversation cheat sheets give you a quick, practical dialogue that you can learn and use… |
Chigusa: If you want this resource, leave us a comment, and we’ll reply with a link to the newest conversation cheat sheet. |
Peter: …and also, look for our monthly Free Gifts of the Month emails. |
Chigusa: You’ll always get new cheat sheets every month inside those emails. |
Peter: Four: Shadow our lesson dialogues. |
Chigusa: …Meaning repeat what you hear out loud. |
Peter: This is one of the easiest ways to start speaking more of your target language. |
Chigusa: As you’re taking our lessons and getting exposed to conversations… just follow along and repeat. |
Peter: You can also use the lesson voice recorder to practice shadowing… |
Chigusa: Or just to practice your pronunciation and compare yourself to a native speaker. |
Peter: And Five: Take Our Hand-Graded Speaking Assessments |
Chigusa: If you really want to put yourself to the test, take our speaking assessments. |
Peter: Assessments test you on what you’ve learned in our lessons… |
Chigusa: And the hand-graded ones specifically test you on writing and speaking, and get graded afterward by a real teacher... |
Peter: …So you can practice speaking and get assessed by one of our teachers. |
Chigusa: So, take one of these tips and try it out… |
Peter: …and remember… |
