Chigusa: Okay listeners... |
Peter: What’s your new year’s resolution? |
Chigusa: And how will you make sure you succeed? |
Peter: Let us know your strategies in the comments! But... |
Chigusa: ...A lot of people fall short... don’t they, Peter? |
Peter: They do. If you don’t have the blueprint for setting successful goals.... |
Chigusa: ... if you don’t know how to stick to your learning routines... |
Peter: ...or stay motivated, listeners, your efforts will probably fall flat. |
Chigusa: Peter, so what is this “secret” blueprint for setting successful goals? |
Peter: Well, Chigusa, It’s not really a secret... but, if you want to know how I went from failing my goals years ago, to finally succeeding, and learning Japanese... |
Chigusa: Pay attention, because this is a GREAT lesson.... |
Peter: ...A few simple changes to my goal made a massive difference. In fact, I now apply these to everyday life goals. Not just languages. Because they work so well. |
Chigusa: What kinds of changes? |
Peter: And again listeners, you can apply these lessons not just to language goals but to any life goal. First, set small, measurable goals. Chigusa, most people typically aim for a vague resolution like “This year, I’ll master Japanese or this year I’ll get in shape.” |
Chigusa: Yeah, or “This year, I’ll go to the gym” |
Peter: But this is really vague and unclear. I mean, what do you think? |
Chigusa: Yeah... you wouldn’t know how to approach them. |
Peter: And most important, with deadlines. For example, for January 2021, I’m learning Russian, my goal is to speak 1 minute of conversation by the deadline of January 31st, 2021. |
Chigusa: Just 1 minute? Okay, that is very manageable. |
Peter: I like how you said that in a very empathetic way. Very manageable. Yes, it’s a small goal but that’s the point! You can’t lift hundreds of pounds on your first day at the gym... |
Chigusa: Right! And you can’t expect to be fluent on your first day or your first month either. |
Peter: But listeners, you can start speaking... have a 1 or 3 minute conversation in your first month.... |
Chigusa: ..and build up from there. That’s how it works. |
Peter: Or at least, that’s how I like to approach it. I have a bit of a busy life - family life, work life... there are many things going on so I have to find space for positive routines to exist. I’ll repeat that. I have to find the spaces for these positive routines to exist because the routine and my daily life is so busy, much like... Chigusa... I think your daily life is pretty busy, right? |
Chigusa: Mm hmm. |
Peter: So finding space. So my first month, I aim for 1 month to see where I can fit the study time in. February, I’ll aim for 3 minutes. March will be 5. And these will add up, so by the end of the year, I’ll try to reach 30 minutes of conversation. |
Chigusa: That makes a lot of sense. |
Peter: So, Listeners, start setting small, monthly goals with a deadline. |
Chigusa: Are there any other tips you can give to our listeners for 2021? |
Peter: Write down a small, measurable goal, set a deadline, and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day. Actually, digital kind of works nice too, you can put it on notes, or email yourself - email reminder - and if you’re really, really brave, you can announce it on a social media challenge but this is always a mixed result. Sometimes it can be motivational and sometimes it can be demotivational. So, again, maybe 2nd month, once you get a little bit of success under your belt. I like to see if I can get that 1 month under my belt. We talk about that in a different lesson but that’s ... a little bit of a higher level tactic. Where you can see it every day might sound strange, but believe it or not, it keeps you focused. |
Chigusa: And that doesn’t just apply to language learning, but any goal you’re trying to achieve in life... |
Peter: It really works. Especially in this digital day and age where it’s so easy to get distracted when you’re sitting in front of a computer. It works. So, listeners, take these tips and apply them right now. |
Chigusa: And once you do that, we challenge you to master a language in 2021. |
