Chigusa: So, Peter, let’s answer the big question first: how did mastering a language change your life? |
Peter: Well Chigusa, I live in Japan and I was able to start a company here. As a result of mastering Japanese. |
Chigusa: Oh wow. So that’s pretty life changing. |
Peter: I also studied for a PHD... at Japanese university and the classes were in Japanese. And as a result of mastering Japanese, I was also able to learn Chinese and other languages. |
Chigusa: And Chinese... why did you pick Chinese? |
Peter: Well, actually, because my wife is Chinese. So I learned it for her and to speak to my in-laws. |
Chigusa: Okay, pretty impressive, Peter. How did Japanese help with Chinese? |
Peter: Well, lots of tough questions today, Chigusa. Great question. Have you ever heard the line “people who succeed, tend to succeed again and again?” |
Chigusa: Yeah, I think heard something like that before. |
Peter: Yeah, don’t sound too enthusiastic now Chigusa. Now, there’s a variation of it for languages. It’s “learning a language is easy when... |
Chigusa: Hmm... “when....you’ve learned another one before?” |
Peter: Exactly. The point is, when you successfully reach a goal, something powerful happens.... |
Chigusa: Oh, what is it? |
Peter: In the process of pursuing a goal, you develop the know-how, the patience and discipline... |
Chigusa: And these will help you reach your language goals.. |
Peter: ...and anything you want to learn or do in life. |
Chigusa: But, Peter, patience and discipline? A lot of us don’t have that. |
Peter: Well, neither did I. You know, Chigusa, no one has it from the start. The secret is — you develop these while you’re pursuing your goal. |
Chigusa: So, listeners, if you’re wondering HOW EXACTLY mastering a language can change your life... |
Peter: the direct answer is... you learn how to attack goals and reach them. You develop the mindset and habits. So because I figured out how to learn languages... while learning Japanese... |
Chigusa: ....you were able to learn Chinese afterwards. |
Peter: Exactly. And you can apply this process anywhere. If you want to start a website or a podcast... |
Chigusa: ...or if you want to write a book or exercise more... |
Peter: ....the same rules apply. And they will help you reach your goals. |
Chigusa: Now, what can our listeners take away from this? How can they stick to their goals? |
Peter: Listeners, keep your goals small and measurable. Here’s an example of what you should take with you. Finish 30 lessons by the end of the month. Deadline March 31st. |
Chigusa: So, 30 lessons is small and measurable. Very easy to do. That’s like 1 lesson a day for the month.
Peter: Exactly. And the deadline gives you the pressure to reach it. |
Chigusa: Listeners follow this small, measurable goal example. |
Peter: Once you set your goal, stick to a routine. |
Chigusa: Decide when and where you’ll study. |
Peter: So, on the train at 9AM or at home at 8PM by the computer. |
Chigusa: Decide how you’ll study: Do 1 audio or video lesson and read the lesson notes. |
Peter: Set a schedule: Every weekday. So, 5 days a week, for example. |
Chigusa: And for how long: 10 minutes. 20 minutes. |
Peter: That last part is important. You need to know when to stop and walk away... |
Chigusa: ...so you can come back tomorrow, continue with your goal... |
Peter: ...and reach it successfully. |
Chigusa: And remember.... |
