| Peter: They do. If you don’t have the blueprint for setting successful goals.... |
| Kellie: ... if you don’t know how to stick to your learning routines... |

| Kellie: Peter, you did pretty well with your 2015 resolution to learn Spanish. |
| Peter: That’s right, Kellie. Last year, I set a goal to speak a full 30 minutes of pure Spanish conversation. I ended up hitting 45 minutes. Listeners, if you want to know how I did it... |
| Kellie: Pay attention, because this is a GREAT lesson. |
| Peter: So, a few simple changes to my goal made a massive difference. |
| Kellie: What kinds of changes? |
| Peter: Most people typically aim for a vague resolution like “This year, I’ll master Japanese or Chinese.” or “This year, I’ll lose weight.” But vague goals are problematic. So I started aiming for smaller, more measurable goals, most importantly with deadlines. In my case, it was to “Speak 30 Minutes of Spanish conversation by December 31st, 2015” |
| Kellie: Oh, that definitely sounds manageable. After all, you can’t expect to magically become fluent. You put a number on it. |
| Peter: Exactly. No magic here, Kellie. Then, I started setting smaller, monthly goals that would add up to 30 minutes by the end of the December 2015. |
| Kellie: How did that work? |
| Peter: Well, my first goal was to hit 3 minutes by January 31st, 2015. |
| Kellie: Ah I see. 3 minutes is definitely measurable and small. It’s easy enough to reach. And it has a deadline. So, how did it go? |
| Peter: Kellie... I FAILED that. I failed that miserably. In February, I failed again. But I reached 3 minutes in March. And by July 31st, I was at around 15 minutes. |
| Kellie: And in December you hit 45 minutes! So despite failing a few times, you stayed on track. |
| Peter: That’s right. And I’m blown away by how easy it was once I changed my goals. |
| Kellie: Are there any other effective tips you can give to our listeners for 2016? |
| Peter: Listeners, write down your small, measurable goal, set a deadline, and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day. I know it sounds strange, but it keeps you focused. |
| Kellie: And that doesn’t just apply to language learning, but any goal you’re trying to achieve in life! |
