Japanese food, sports, television, movies, music, Japanese anime, manga, and the list goes on - food and entertainment is a huge part of Japanese culture.
Do they make takuan differently now? Historically infamous smell, but great taste. I loved it growing up, but the smell was always problematic (my sister wouldn't let me buy it). When I buy it now, I don't notice any particular smell. Do they process it differently now, or did I just get used to it?
