Question about meaning in this sentence

So i've been trying to read the story on this website.

And the second sentence

猿回しや動物の芸を見せて暮らしていました

who earned his living by showing off around a monkey and other animal's tricks.

my question is, when i was reading the japanese, i understood 猿回し to mean showman who performs training monkeys.

so going back to the japanese sentence, 猿回しや動物の芸を見せて暮らしていました. So he showed a showman according to my understanding of the grammar, , which doesn't translate correctly.

Or maybe it's more like 猿回しや動物の芸を見せて暮らしていました. I'm not sure how to correctly parse the sentence.
