同じぐらい、同じくらい?

Postby wildjasmin296741 » January 12th, 2014 3:59 am

こんばんは、

Is any rule as to when to use くらい and when to use ぐらい after a word? Google translator seems to think 同じくらい is correct, but I also have read 同じぐらい in a book. どちらが正しいですか?

I am pretty sure that they are interchangable.I found this website that gives some great examples for using the expression, and the host uses it interchangably. :) Maybe it is a style thing.

Jasmin-san, トラさん、
こんにちは :D

Both 同じくらい and 同じぐらい are correct.
There used to be some criteria for which to use, but no one really cares...

When we pronounce 同じくらい, we have to stop the air flow inside month before saying くらい
while 同じぐらい doesn't require that.
This makes くらい sound clearer, so there could be some people who choose くらい over ぐらい
to emphasise this part. I just don't believe this is a "rule".

It's also possible that tendency can be different in regions.
In any way, Google Translate is usually wrong, so don't worry what it tells you
