Understanding male speakers

Postby andycarmenjapanese8100 » March 10th, 2013 12:59 am

Over my year of studying Japanese I've noticed that female speakers are a lot easier to understand than males. Females seem to talk more clearly whereas males mumble, make one word run into the next so its hard to tell when each one begins and ends, and have a greater tendancy to roll their Rs. I'd even go as far as saying regional accents are less of a barrier to my comprehension than the speaker's gender is. I'd be curious to hear if anybody disagrees.

Yes, it's the same for me. Males are harder to understand, and older males are much harder to understand.

Wow, really? I've never heard of that actually

Older people sometimes speaks in the way we native speakers can't understand well
But, perhaps women tend to enunciate than men...
