Learning japanese through JapanesePod101 lessons?

Postby benhowie96024 » August 14th, 2012 7:25 pm

Hello, folks!

I have been learning Japanese with JapanesePod101 for about a week now, going through the Absolute Beginner Seasons. I am accompanying this study by talking with two native Japanese speakers over Skype, and watching some children cartoon shows they recommended. Any new words or sentences I hear, I run by them or research on my own.

My question is: if I follow the lessons on JapanesePod101, is there a natural progression from beginner to intermediate to advanced? Will I eventually be able to listen to the advanced sections simply by following the lessons on the site, and going through the different courses on offer?

Thank you, and good luck with your learning!

Ben.

I think you need to do practise on your own (or with natives), studying the grammar points and vocabulary so you can solidly memorize them. If you just go from audio lesson to audio lesson you will forget most of the things you learn.

If you are a beginner, I would recommend studying on your own until you get at least the basics of grammar and a decent vocabulary (how can you talk with natives if you can't say anything, and can't understand them?), but what works for you.

I would also recommend getting a textbook as well.

Good luck!

I think the current recommended progression is something like Newbie2 -> Newbie3 -> Beginner4 -> Beginner5 -> Beginner6 -> .... That progression uses the newer style lessons (which I prefer) I think.

I suspect you can pick things up just by using Jpod101. I like using a textbook too (Japanese for Busy People). When you study something in the textbook, you recall that you already heard it on Jpod101 (or vice versa). I think that resonance is really helpful.

jpod101は ものすごく べんり です。
[jpod101 is really useful]

Hi there!
ricardo4567129279-san, マーティンさん, thank you very much for helpful tips for your colleague! :D
Ben-san, JapanesePod101.com has a lot of lessons with different seasons in each level, so that everyone can take enough time to master Japanese with their own pace. :wink:
At the same time, I recommend you to practice with your friends since you've got native speakers! When we study alone, we cannot really have a real feedbacks and your friends would help you there.
Good luck! :wink:
